A password-protected directory or area is a folder which could be accessed when a username and a password are typed in, so no unauthorized people may view its content. This function may be used for the main folder of a particular website or just for a particular subfolder based on the needs you have. As an example, when you are building a new Internet site and you do not want people to see it before it's 100% ready, you might want to restrict the access to it as a whole, while if you would like only some individuals to be able to access particular files, you can password-protect only a certain folder, while the remaining portion of the website could be seen by anyone. Regardless, a “403 Forbidden” error page will appear if the login details the visitor enters aren't accurate. Even a direct link to a file won't work so long as any folder above it is password-protected.
